Setting up iMessage on iPhone, iPod and iPad

on Thursday 23 August 2012

In iOS 5, one of the main new features that was released was iMessage. It is a free way to send messages to your friends who have an iOS device. What makes this service extraordinary, is that it is completely free, no charges whatsoever! It is just like BBM for Blackberry. iMessage lets you send photos, videos and much more to existing iMessage users all around the world.

Today, I'll show you how to setup iMessage for your iPhone, iPod or iPad running iOS 5:

(Note: Make sure you are using the latest version of iOS)

On iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go to Messages.
  • Toggle the switch of iMessage to on.

  • You should now see a message saying "Activating"
  • You can now enter your receive to addresses, this can be an email address (Apple ID) or just your iPhone phone number, or both. The phone number part should already be filled out. If you have an Apple ID and want to use that as well as your phone number, enter it here.

  • Once completed, you will have an active iMessage account.
  • You will also have the option to send your message as an SMS if iMessage is not available.
On iPod touch or iPad:

Setting up iMessage on these devices is slightly different as there is no telephone number associate with them.

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go to Messages.
  • Toggle the switch of iMessage to on.
  • A box will pop up asking you to enter your Apple ID.

  • If you have an Apple ID, enter it here. If you don't, select Create a new account.
  • That's it. You have now have an active iMessage account set up on your iPod or iPad.
If you have multiple Apple devices, you might want to keep separate accounts for them all. To do this, you'll have to create separate Apple IDs. If you want to keep the same Apple ID on all of your devices, just enter them.

Once you have installed iMessage, check out this post on how to send rage faces on iMessage or MMS.
